In this Advanced/Gifted Reading and Writing Course, students will be challenged to think, read, and write beyond their current grade level.
This course will offer students the opportunity to study literature and learn writing skills at a grade 6-7 level.
The reading component of this course will involve a novel study on the book The Giver by Lois Lowry. This award-winning novel The Giver is a fantastic book for getting kids thinking about social studies, politics, and society's norms. This is an ideal book study for upper elementary and middle school aged students.This book is popular with upper elementary students because it captures their imagination about a world far different from their own. (If students in this course have already read this book, then another book will be used).
Some of the comprehension skills addressed in this novel study include:
Analyzing imagery
Making inferences
Describing character change
Analyzing character motives
Identifying main idea
Analyzing setting
Context clues and vocabulary
Using descriptive language
Summarizing
Evaluating conclusions
The writing component of this class will introduce students to writing a 5 paragraph essay. This skill is often introduced in grades 7 or 8 and is essential for high school. Students will learn how to write proper introductions, body paragraphs, and conclusions. Several types of essays will be taught during this course.
This course is highly recommended for students who are very independent, responsible, identified as gifted, who like a challenge, and students who generally get high grades in school.
