COURSE SYLLABUS
Course Description and Objectives:
Since a rich vocabulary is essential to successful reading comprehension, student word knowledge is strongly linked to academic success. Worldly Wise 3000 is designed to help students in all grades improve their vocabulary development by furthering their understanding of new words and concepts. Furthermore, grammar skills will be enhanced through a review of basic principles and exercise drills.
Wordly Wise 3000 - Classroom Teaching and Evaluation Outline
Thorough review of each vocabulary word: personal experience chart, pronunciation, definition, parts of speech, etymologies, derivations, use in sentences, synonyms, antonyms
Complete all exercises (collectively to start; individually thereafter)
Create new descriptive sentences using each word (or any form of the word)
Understanding words as used in context (reading passage) with comprehension questions
Grammar lessons and exercises built in to each class
Evaluations:
Using words in original creative or personal paragraph writing
Quiz after every lesson; Mid-term and final test

Preparing for High School English Studies
Through Short Fiction and Poetry
Students will read a series of challenging Grade 9-10 level stories and poems from a variety of authors and time periods. They will become acquainted with a wide range of writing forms and styles, and relevant questions for literary analysis, while also gaining skills that will help them read and respond to the texts they encounter. Furthermore, the craft of writing will be explored by closely examining any challenging vocabulary used by authors as well as by understanding basic and complicated grammatical structures found in their texts. By the end of the course, students will have developed a solid understanding of each of the following areas, which will serve them well for their literary studies in high English classes and beyond:
Elements of Literature: character, plot, theme, dialogue, point of view, tone, mood, etc.
Literary and Poetic Devices: similes, metaphors, symbolism, foreshadowing, irony, hyperbole
+ dozens more
Writing: syntax, essay writing (thesis, paragraph development), idioms, conciseness, and more
Vocabulary: definitions, parts of speech, etymology, derivations, understanding in context; use in original writing
Grammar: confused words, parts of speech, punctuation, concrete vs specific language, and much more.
