Percy Jackson’s the Lightning Thief (Grade 3+)
Interdisciplinary Classical Studies and Novel Reader’s Comprehension Course:
Percy Jackson’s the Lightning Thief (Grade 3+)
Course Summary
This course is an interdisciplinary literature/history course exploring Rick Riordan’s award- winning book The Lightning Thief. Half of the lesson will be focused on literary analysis, critical reading and reading comprehension of the novel. The other half of the lesson will include a 20- 30 minute history lesson on the historical themes of the novel, including an exploration of Classical Greek mythology, the history of Greek civilization and other themed topics within the book.
Students who have already read this text are welcome to join this course to participate in the discussion and history lessons (or if there is enough interest, we can open additional sessions for the other Percy Jackson books in the series after The Lightning Thief).
Assignments
The daily assignment will consist of reading one chapter (20-30 pages) of the novel. A short series of reading comprehension questions will be posted each day to ensure that students are keeping up with the course reading. Students will also be provided with a variety of optional interactive videos, books, magazines, archeological site explorations and other resources to explore the topics of the day at their own pace. It is important that the student is willing to
complete the weekly reading assignments, which are essential for the class discussion.
Materials
Students will be provided all materials and texts for this course (an .epub digital copy of the text can be provided) but students are encouraged to have their own paper copy of the novel. I will also provide a variety of optional books, videos, site visits, activities and reading materials for self-study on many of the topics so the student can continue to explore his/her interests in more depth after the course is completed.
