Beginning Phonics and Reading: Phase 2/Pre-3
Student age: 3
Prerequisites: None.
Note: Phase 1 phonics is based on sound/environmental/rhythmic awareness; this course starts at beginning of age 3 letter/phoneme awareness.
Course Summary:
Through movement, music, visual aids, art and other play-based activities, this course is a beginners introduction to reading and phonics. This class will have your child reading small books right away through grouping the most frequent vowel sounds and teaching decoding and blending through fun activities and song. We will learn all of the alphabet sounds in this course, progressing into more complex pre-K phonemes (units of sound that make words) and tricky sight words. Some parent coaching worksheets and an abundance of at-home materials and reading list suggestions will also be provided to help parents in teaching your child to read.
We will also have story time and lots of fun activities to teach students’ reading comprehension and a lifelong love of reading. By the end of this course, children should be able to read a variety of short, simple cvc word books on their own, and recognize their first tricky sight words.
Materials:
Students will be provided with all materials and early readers for this course including:
- Flashcards
- A weekly package of daily practice worksheets
- Printable leveled reader e-books for each week
- Additional play-based interactive activities, songs and materials
Students should have access to a computer and printer as well as basic art supplies (safety scissors, crayons, paints, gluestick, etc).
Curriculum:
Phonics and reading curriculum based on accelerated US Common Core Standards and drawing upon proven programs and materials such as Twinkl and Jolly Phonics.
Assignments: Because it is essential in early reading for students to have plenty of daily play-based practice engaging with words and letters, parents will be provided with a week of family activities, worksheets, videos, songs, flashcards and other suggestions for practicing the week’s lessons every day. It is highly recommended that lessons and early readers are practiced for at least 20 minutes each day, and that families read a storybook together daily (a recommended reading list will also be provided).
