Course Summary:
Through visual aids, art and other interactive and play-based activities, this course is a deep dive into reading and phonics. This class builds upon students’ existing abilities to decode and blend basic CVC words, and teaches more advanced phonemes and reading skills. We will learn more advanced sight words, lots of tips and tricks for challenging sounds and students will be reading early readers with excellent fluency by the end of the course.
Some parent coaching worksheets and an abundance of at-home materials and reading list suggestions will also be provided to help parents in teaching your child to read.
We will also have story time and lots of fun activities to teach students’ reading comprehension and a lifelong love of reading. By the end of this course, children should be able to read longer, more complex cvc word books on their own, and recognize most of the first 100 dolch sight words. Students will be moving into reading full easy readers at this level, with individualized support at their appropriate levels.

Because it is essential in early reading for students to have plenty of daily play-based practice engaging with words and letters, parents will be provided each week with an electronic package of family activities, worksheets, flashcards and other suggestions for practicing the week’s lessons every day. It is highly recommended that lessons and early readers are practiced for at least 20 minutes each day, and that families read a storybook together daily (a recommended reading list will also be provided).
